Can Obama Work With Others?

The light bulb just flipped on. When speaking with longtime friend (and editor at Thoughtfulwomen.org) Judy Lloyd of California, she said something that for Floyd was an “a-ha” moment. The topic was Barack Obama’s failure to work with Congress. Here is what she said: “I don’t think he can hear the arguments of opponents. He doesn’t understand their views or their thinking. He isn’t wired like that.”

Barack Obama came to office promising a new kind of politics. He promised to solve problems and work with opponents. He was going to bring hope for a new day. Instead, Obama only heightens tension, unmercifully attacks and demonizes his opponents, and throws temper fits when not getting his own way.

This trait is typified by the current tactics Obama is employing in his campaign. Politico called it throwing “the kitchen sink.” Any attack against Mitt Romney is ok. Just throw mud, throw more mud, and hope nobody turns and asks about your own record.

Listen to these quotes from chief campaign attack dog Joe Biden on June 26th in Waterloo, Iowa:

Here’s the bottom line: Bain and their companies made a lot of money facilitating the outsourcing and offshoring of American jobs…Yeah, they made a lot of money, but in the process, they devastated American communities…So give Mitt Romney credit: He is a job creator. In Singapore. And China. And India.

The uninformed might buy these dishonest lines, but critics in the media, business, and even some Democrats have called Obama’s attacks unfair. For starters, Mitt Romney was named CEO of Bain Capital in 1991 when the firm was in big trouble. He took a symbolic one dollar salary his first year. He turned Bain around as he has turned countless other enterprises around. He left in 1999 to take over the scandal-marred Utah 2002 Winter Olympics.

The years he worked for Bain were great years for America, nothing like the devastation and lack of job creation we have seen during the Obama recession. We all yearn for a return to the good times of the 1990’s.

But the attacks don’t stop there. Biden continues his rant:

As governor, his administration signed a $160,000 a month contract that paid people abroad to help poor people in Massachusetts get food stamps. And when the Massachusetts Legislature passed a bill saying you couldn’t outsource state contracts overseas … he vetoed it.

This attack is just lunacy because everyone knows that the Democrats could overturn any veto made by Mitt Romney, if they voted together. The Democrats have had a lock on the Massachusetts state legislature for decades. When Romney was governor, he never had a moment when he could successfully veto any Democrat legislation. From 2002-2004, the Massachusetts House was 82.5% Democrat, and the Massachusetts Senate was 85.6% Democrat. From 2004-2006, the Massachusetts House was 85% Democrat, and the Massachusetts Senate was 86.8% Democrat.

Obama has demonstrated great difficulty working with the opposing party. In contrast, Romney, because he was governor of such a Democratic stronghold as Massachusetts, demonstrated an ability to work successfully with his opponents to get things done. This is a trait Obama lacks and hasn’t demonstrated but only trumpeted in a successful 2008 campaign against Hillary Clinton, and then John McCain.

Finally, the absurdities of the Obama attacks are visible in these Biden words during the same speech:

His whole career, Mitt Romney has looked at the American worker as part of the problem…The president and I see you — the American worker — as part of the solution. So to all those skeptics — and to our Republican opponents especially: Don’t tell me that America can’t make things anymore…can’t compete on the world market again…can’t lead the world again.

It was Barack Obama who told us just weeks ago, “The private sector is doing fine. Where we’re seeing weaknesses in our economy have to do with state and local government.” We have never known employees of state and local government to “make things.” Since day one, if you look at the emphasis of the Obama administration, the goal has been to increase the size and scope of government.

From our vantage point, surveying reality, we believe that if you want a president who is concerned with the private sector and jobs for people who “make things” (or create wealth), a president who can work with opponents, and finally a president who won’t blame everyone else for his problems, you will be more satisfied with anyone but Barack Obama.
