What You Need To Know
On multiple occasions this week AlertsUSA subscribers were notified via text messages to their mobile devices regarding the heightened threat environment surrounding the Sochi Winter Olympics and the resulting impact on airline travel here in the U.S..
Earlier this week the Dept. of Homeland Security began by warning U.S. and foreign airlines traveling to Russia during the Olympics of the need to be on the lookout for toothpaste and other small toiletry containers which some intelligence indicates may be used to hold ingredients that could be used to construct a bomb aboard an aircraft. Not only were the airlines warned, but security screenings at U.S. and foreign airports was ramped up significantly.
So serious was the threat intelligence that late this week the Transportation Security Administration completely banned all liquids, gels, aerosols & powders of any size or type within carry-on baggage on flights between the U.S. and Russia, as well as other major gateway cities, until at least the end of the Olympics.
Media outlets are reporting that the threat intelligence is, in part, linked to the arrest of two Chechen women in France who may have revealed elements of an ongoing plot.
Readers are cautioned that while it may seem foolish, or even humorous, for authorities to be targeting such innocuous items as tubes of toothpaste or shampoo, this is serious business given the field craft and methods actively employed by terrorists worldwide. While a vast majority of the public's understanding of explosives is limited to what is portrayed in movies and on television, liquid and gel types of explosives are very real and in wide use in mining and demolition applications. Perhaps most troubling is some are relatively simple to make.
As an example, triacetone triperoxide (TATP) can be made from readily available substances like hydrogen peroxide, acetone and acid. In fact, one can easily find the ingredients necessary to produce a number of blasting agents at your local grocery and hardware stores. All it takes is motivation and a little knowledge. And as liquid explosives are very volatile, elaborate or powerful detonators are not necessary, making detection by airport security that much more difficult.
Readers may recall al Qaeda's foiled 2006 transatlantic aircraft plot targeting at least 10 airliners traveling from the United Kingdom to the United States and Canada. The plan was to bring down the aircraft using liquid explosives carried on board in toiletry containers and drink bottles. It was this particular plot which led to the initial ban on carry-on liquids and gels throughout the commercial aviation sector.
There have also been several other similar plots revealed over the years, including ...

China Planning Second Air Defense Zone
Over S. China Sea
Feb 08, 2014

What You Need To Know
Tensions in the Western Pacific are again increasing following reports that Beijing will soon announce the establishment of a new air defense identification zone (ADIZ), this time over the disputed Paracel and Spratly Islands located in the South China Sea.
As previously reported by Threat Journal on multiple occassions, China is increasingly flexing it's rapidly growing military muscle by staking larger and larger territorial claims in the waters off the country's sizeable East Coast.
In January, China implemented a new law ordering that vessels obtain permission from Chinese authorities before fishing or surveying in two thirds of the 1.5 million square mile South China Sea. The fishing grounds are used by Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and several other countries in the region.
The Philippines and Vietnam condemned the move, with the U.S. calling the new restrictions "provocative and potentially dangerous." Last November China declared an air defense identification zone over a large portion of the East China Sea which included the Japanese Senkaku Islands that Beijing claims as its own.
In May of last year, China began demanding sovereignty over the southern Japanese Ryukyu Islands, of which Okinawa is the largest and their obvious intended target. In an article appearing in The People's Daily, the country's most-read newspaper, the authors argued that the Ryukyu were a vassal state of China before being annexed by Japan at the end of the 19th century, and that Tokyo's defeat in World War II should have prompted the return of the islands to Beijing.

MESSAGE FOR THE MONTH FROM JASON SMITH MISSOUR REP FROM DISTRICT 8TH

WH

Hunting and fishing are a way of life for many in Missouri. For generations, families have come together to fish Missouri's streams and lakes. For my family, the beginning of hunting season is celebrated like a holiday. I grew up fishing on the Current River and Norfork and Clearwater Lakes. To protect the rights of sportsmen, this week the House of Representatives passed The Sportsmen's Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act. The bill protects the ability of sportsmen to hunt and fish on many public lands.

In our district, The Sportsmen's Heritage Act will have a major economic impact. Our Eighth Congressional District is home to some of the best and most diverse hunting and fishing opportunities in the Show-Me State. Many small businesses in communities across our district cater to hunters and fishermen who visit our region. To protect our rural economies, I worked to include an amendment in The Sportsmen's Heritage Act that will ensure the National Park Service cannot restrict motor vessels in the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. My common sense amendment will ensure the federal government will not be a roadblock for families who responsibly hunt and fish.

The Sportsmen's Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act will keep public lands open for hunting and fishing. Specifically, the legislation includes measures to:

Require hunting, recreational shooting and fishing to be recognized activities on all Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management properties;
Protect recreational shooting in National Parks under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management;
Clarify that the Environmental Protection Agency does not have the right to regulate lead components found in either traditional ammunition or fishing tackle;
Protect law-abiding individuals' Constitutional right to bear arms on lands owned by the Army Corps of Engineers;
Ensure motor vessels cannot be further restricted in the Ozark National Scenic Riverways.

Congress would be wise to recognize the contributions that sportsmen make to protect our nation's resources. Hunting and fishing are a central part of Missouri's rural heritage and my experience has always been that people who live off the land are the best stewards of our natural resources.

The Sportsmen's Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act upholds generations of tradition. The bill also ensures that our rural economy will be protected from new regulations on hunters and fishermen. Families can continue to fish and hunt together and Missouri’s abundant resources and natural beauty will continue to draw people to our state and fuel our rural economy.

The Most Corrupt Village in America

HS

ds

When the police stopped Luvina Mobley Smith, they found a pound of pot in her car and five EBT food stamp cards which drug dealers often take in payment for drugs. It would have been an ordinary enough story except that Smith, despite being a convicted felon, was also the Deputy Clerk of Alorton.
Luvina is the daughter of Callie Mobley, Alorton’s former mayor, who had collected double her salary and served time in jail for income tax evasion. Mayor Mobley, who had been the mayor of Alorton for two decades, had been doing the same thing back to her days as liquor commissioner.
St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly warned, “Alorton City Hall is becoming a criminal narco state at the expense of the citizens of Alorton.”
Alorton, an African-American village run by Democrats, may actually be the most corrupt village in Illinois and the United States.
Alorton’s violent crime rate has been as high as ten times the national average.  Its biggest employers are health care, fast food, welfare and education.  The unemployment rate for black men is at 31%.  Half the people in Alorton live below the poverty line. 70% of poor households consist of single mothers.
The village has the fourth highest poverty rate of any place in Illinois. Its corruption and misery are examples of what happens when the Democratic Party’s power goes unchallenged.
Mayor Randy “Rambo” McCallum Sr. came into office telling cops, “I run this mother___” and ordered them to rob competing drug dealers and split the money with him. When drug dealers were busted, the seized drugs and money were brought to his house where he pocketed the money and resold the drugs.
McCallum Sr. stole so much money that there were no bank deposits for a year.  When an undercover informant went to his house, he found crack cocaine on the kitchen table being prepped for sale.
Alorton’s police chief, Michael Baxton Sr., set up surveillance cameras in the police station that he could monitor from home to alert Mayor McCallum when the seized drugs and money were coming in.
The police chief went down for stealing Xbox video games from the trunk of a stolen car telling another cop, “This ain’t (expletive), I’m gonna put you on some real (expletive), teach you how to be real police.”

Published on Feb 8, 2014
Geraldo Rivera took on Bill O'Reilly Friday night over whether O'Reilly was disrespectful to President Obama in their big Super Bowl interview. Rivera gave O'Reilly some benefit of the doubt, but other than that thought O'Reilly was a bit too confrontational and didn't give Obama the kind of respect a president normally deserves.

Rivera argued it was less like an interview and more like a meeting of the minds with the "President of Most of the White Guys of America" (O'Reilly) against the president of the rest of the country, and told O'Reilly that it was out of line for him to refer to Obama as a "community organizer."

He said it was "unsettling to watch," and the president deserves "all the respect and dignity" of the office. O'Reilly fired back that his job is not to please, it's to "get information" and ask "the tough questions," and believed that he gave enough deference and respect to the office of the presidency.

Rivera concluded that the larger point O'Reilly made about inner-city families was "obscured" by how he "minimized" the president.

One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors. Plato
What if our forefathers had just stayed in
England and succumbed to religious persecution rather than gathering up, suffering hardships and even death to start their own country where their God given freedoms could be realized? The signers of the Declaration of  Independence in many cases were targeted some lost life and many lost treasure. For  example, Lewis Morris, the fourth New York delegate, saw all his timber, crops and livestock taken. For seven years he was barred from his home
and family. It was a challenge but with remarkable courage and a commitment for a better life America became the country founded on divine principles.
We cannot succumb now to the oppressive agenda of this administration.
The conservatives staying divided and unresponsive while the Democrats ravage our rights, recklessly spend money and lie to the people does not help to keep America the super power of the 21st century.
How will we respond to Mark Levin’s question? “Are enough of us left who believe in the American spirit,in individual sovereignty or have too many of us already surrendered to the
entitlement state?”

Let’s answer his question with a resounding yes we believe in America.Let’s find those among us that believe in the American spirit by engaging in conversation with them and spreading the truth. It will take the 3 C’s courage, challenge and commitment. No more complaining, just optimism that we will accept the challenge to stay committed and to have the courage to fight for the freedoms that our Creator intends for us all. Republican Women with a resounding YES and optimism accept the challenge to unite.

Top Adviser To The Chinese Government Calls For A Global Currency To Replace The US Dollar (Hang on - Here We Go...

wH

The former chief economist at the World Bank, Justin Yifu Lin, is advising the Chinese government that the time has come for a single global currency. Lin, who is also a professor at Peking University, says that the U.S. dollar “is the root cause of global financial and economic crises” and that moving to a “global super-currency” will bring much needed stability to the global financial system. And considering how recklessly the Federal Reserve has been pumping money into the global financial system and how recklessly the U.S. government has been going into debt, it is hard to argue with his logic. Why would anyone want to trust the United States to continue to run things after how badly we have abused our position? The United States has greatly benefited from having the de facto reserve currency of the planet for the past several decades, but now that era is coming to an end. In fact, the central bank of China has already announced that it will no longer be stockpiling more U.S. dollars. The rest of the world is getting tired of playing our game. Our debt is wildly out of control and we are creating money as if there was no tomorrow. As the rest of the world starts moving away from the U.S. dollar, global power is going to shift even more to the East, and that is going to have very serious consequences for ordinary Americans.
Sadly, most Americans don’t even realize what is happening. These comments by a top adviser to the Chinese government should have made front page news all over the nation. I had to go to China Daily to find the following excerpt…
The World Bank’s former chief economist wants to replace the US dollar with a single global super-currency, saying it will create a more stable global financial system.
“The dominance of the greenback is the root cause of global financial and economic crises,” Justin Yifu Lin told Bruegel, a Brussels-based policy-research think tank. “The solution to this is to replace the national currency with a global currency.”
Lin, now a professor at Peking University and a leading adviser to the Chinese government, said expanding the basket of major reserve currencies — the dollar, the euro, the Japanese yen and pound sterling — will not address the consequences of a financial crisis. Internationalizing the Chinese currency is not the answer, either, he said.
And this is not the first time that we have heard these kinds of comments coming out of China. For example, Xinhua News Agency called for a “de-Americanized world” back on October 14th…
“It is perhaps a good time for the befuddled world to start considering building a de-Americanized world.”
That particular news agency is controlled by the Chinese government, and if the Chinese government did not approve of that statement it never would have made it into the paper.
Then in November, the central bank of China announced that it is going to stop stockpiling U.S. dollars.
Most Americans don’t want to hear this, but what we are witnessing is a massive shift in global power. China is catching up to us in a multitude of ways, and they are getting tired of playing second fiddle to the United States. In fact, China is already surpassing the U.S. in a number of key areas…
-China accounts for more global trade than anyone else in the world.
-China imports more oil from Saudi Arabia than anyone else in the world.
-China imports more oil overall than anyone else in the world.
-It is now being projected that Chinese GDP will surpass U.S. GDP in 2017.
When the rest of the world quits using U.S. dollars to trade with one another and quits lending our dollars back to us at ultra-low interest rates, things are going to start changing very rapidly.
In a previous article, I discussed why having the reserve currency of the world is so important to the United States…

IRS hearings: ‘This scandal is not over. The lying has not stopped.’

WH
IRS hearings: 'This scandal is not over. The lying has not stopped.'

John Hayward
Cleta Mitchell, attorney for an assortment of Tea Party groups that received very special attention from Barack Obama’s politicized Internal Revenue Service, lowered the boom on what she described as a “sham, non-existent” Justice Department investigation of the scandal during House Ways and Means Committee hearings on Thursday:
“I want to make three primary points here today,” said Mitchell.  ”First, the IRS scandal is real. It’s not pretend, it’s real.  Number two, the IRS scandal is not just a bone-headed bunch of bureaucrats in some remote office contrary to what the President of the United States told the American People on Sunday.  And, number 3, the IRS scandal is not over.  It is continuing to this day.  And the Department of Justice Investigation is a sham.  It is a nonexistent investigation.”
Her one-sentence summary of the scandal was powerful stuff: “The IRS, at the direction of some political elites in Washington - not in Cincinnati, but Washington – took what had been, for decades, a process of reviewing applications for exempt status that, for 501(c)(4) organizations, could be expected to take three to four weeks, and they converted that process into one that took three to four years, and in some cases is still not over.”
Okay, it was a long sentence, but she got the whole thing in there with a few pauses for comma insertion.  This scandal is not complicated.  There’s no reason responsible reporters should throw up their hands and declare the whole thing an inscrutable mess nobody can ever figure out.  There’s no doubt the conservative groups targeted by the IRS received wildly disproportionate treatment, of a nature displayed to very, very few non-conservative applicants.  The media has been helping Obama drag the scandal out until the public loses interest, so perhaps some people have forgotten this whole thing began with the IRS admitting it acted improperly.  Remember that?  Long before Lois Lerner was taking the Fifth to avoid testimony over a situation Barack Obama claims is utterly devoid of corruption, she rose to fame by staging a press conference in which a planted question allowed her to get out in front of a devastating internal agency report.
As Mitchell noted in her testimony, there have been documented instances of an IRS official lying to Congress during the investigation, which is a crime.  Among those lies was a false assertion by the IRS commissioner that no targeting of conservative groups was occurring… the very same scandalous process Lerner would later admit to.  Confidential information from various groups – the Texas Public Policy Foundation, Governor Rick Perry’s Public Policy Council, the National Organization for Marriage, Koch Industries – has been leaked, which is a crime.
For the President of the United States to tell the American people there isn’t a “smidgen of corruption” about this scandal is a lie, an objectively false statement.  He didn’t say “yes, there were violations of the law, but I was not aware of them at the time, and I will ensure they are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.”  He denied these crimes took place at all, and it is simply not credible that even this incredibly inept and willfully ignorant President was completely unaware of them.  He’s so lucky he’s not a Republican, and this scandal wasn’t about abusing power to target liberal groups; his caricature as a tyrant, liar, or at best bumbling ignoramus would already be written into popular culture.
And of course, if President Obama had repeated his long-ago promises to thoroughly investigate these crimes on SuperBowl Sunday, he’d have been laughed off the national stage.  As Mitchell angrily noted, no one is investigating any of this.  A few half-hearted investigatory rituals have been conducted here and there, just to check off the boxes, but this is the first investigation in history where the victims were only briefly consulted as an afterthought.  There hasn’t been much of a perp walk for the crimes Mitchell tallied up, has there?  Even in cases where the perpetrator’s identity is written into the Congressional Record?
One of those victims, True the Vote founder Catherine Engelbrecht, appeared at this week’s hearings to deliver the testimony Obama’s “investigators” evidently aren’t interested in hearing:

“It must be made publicly known that across this country, citizens just like me are being targeted by an Administration willing to take any action necessary to silence opposition,” said Engelbrecht, who received visits from agencies far beyond Internal Revenue.  It should not be lost on anyone that she caught the eye of this regime by standing up against vote fraud.  The people who claim they can micro-manage 300 million health care policies don’t seem to like the idea of using the best available identification technology to monitor the polls.

The Lesson of Chris Christie and Bridgegate: Don’t Fall In Love Too Fast

The Little Red Governorship & The Great Gray Bridge

christiestorm
The political fallout of “Bridgegate” may not be entirely clear just yet – but the lesson it holds for Republicans looking for a 2016 presidential candidate should be. Don’t fall in love too early. Nobody should be rushing to pick a 2016 presidential nominee two years before the first primaries.
One of the iron laws of politics is that sooner or later, everybody gets a turn inside the piñata. For Chris Christie, who enjoyed an unusually good 2013 while touting a brand of moderate Republicanism that irks both liberals and conservatives, the past month has involved taking a lot of whacks. The party started with the revelation in early January of emails showing that his deputy chief of staff, Bridget Kelly, conspired with his appointees to the Port Authority, under David Wildstein, to exacerbate Fort Lee, New Jersey’s chronic traffic problems by closing a lane leading onto the George Washington Bridge, apparently in retaliation for the Mayor of Fort Lee backing Barbara Buono, Christie’s hapless and overmatched 2013 opponent.
Lots of people on the Left and Right have been eager to bury Christie, but as of now, their obituaries still seem premature. Any candidate who comes to the presidential race, especially a candidate with any sort of executive experience, is going to have some dents – some bad appointments and associations, some things that didn’t work or didn’t happen as promised. And Christie is still a highly charismatic guy and a prolific fundraiser, and few of his potential rivals for the support of moderates in the GOP primaries have given much sign that they intend to run.

Lawmakers push to protect electric grid after report on attack, Mostly unreported untill now.. Heavy weapons used, Alarm wires cut.

WH

Lawmakers are pushing to impose federal standards for protecting the country's electric grid from attack in the wake of a new report about a sniper assault on a California electrical substation last year that has raised fears the power grid is vulnerable to terrorism.
The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said she and fellow senators plan to ask the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which has jurisdiction over the electric grid's reliability, to "set minimum security standards for critical substations."
The April 16, 2013 the attack on Pacific Gas & Electric’s Metcalf transmission substation involved snipping AT&T fiber-optic lines to knock out phone and 911 service, and firing shots into a PG&E substation, causing outages. The assault had not been widely publicized until The Wall Street Journal reported new details in a story on Wednesday.
The FBI is the lead agency in the investigation and an agency spokesman told the newspaper it doesn’t think the incident was a terror attack. However, Jon Wellinghoff, chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission at the time, called it "the most significant incident of domestic terrorism involving the U.S. power grid that has ever occurred."
The incident began when intruders lifted heavy manhole covers at about 1:30 a.m. in two places on Monterey Highway south of San Jose, climbed under the road, and cut AT&T fiber optic cables, temporarily knocking out 911 service and phone service.
In a 19-minute period, gunmen fired more than 100 rounds into substation equipment, disabling 17 of 20 big transformers, causing about $16 million in damage, according to The Wall Street Journal. No arrests have been made in the case.
In December, during an oversight hearing, Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., described "an unprecedented and sophisticated attack on an electric grid substation with military-style weapons. Communications were disrupted. The attack inflicted substantial damage."
He said he would withhold details of the incident to avoid harming the investigation but added he had been in touch with the FBI about it.
One proposal being discussed in Congress is would give the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission the power to write and impose interim rules on grid defenses. The utility industry would still be able to influence any permanent requirements, according to the Journal.
Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., said "the last thing I want to do is regulate any industry." But he told the newspaper utilities must do more to protect the grid for the sake of national security.
Under current law, the commission has to accept or reject proposals written by an industry-dominated group, but cannot alter them, according to the report.
Some utility industry executives told the Journal it would be difficult to come up with rules for improving security that would work in both urban and rural areas.
"One size fits all may not get you true resiliency," said Lisa Barton, executive vice president of transmission for American Electric Power, adding that increasing protections could be costly. "I'm not saying it isn't worth it," she said.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
