China's Brand New Elevated Bus is Launched

China has been inventing and making stuff so rapidly for so long a time that it really takes our breath away! A few short months ago we were talking about this Transit Elevated Bus (TEB) concept as a wild idea, but - lo and behold! - here it is in all its glory! Sitting two meters above the ground, the TEB is built like a tunnel that allows it to pass over traffic, gliding gracefully over gridlocked highways. It’s a superb invention and here’s what happened when the prototype went for a test run in Qinhuangdao, Hebei province.

The TEB is an extraordinary bus and could potentially revolutionize city travel. The current design is able to fit in 300 passengers, making it more like an airliner than a typical bus. The vehicle is 72 feet long by 25 feet wide. Its top speed will be a steady 60 km per hour and it will travel on special rails that can be laid upon roads, rather like a tram

One clear advantage is the amount of space the TEB will save on already clogged up roads. In places like China, car ownership is increasing exponentially, while cities are expanding at incredible speeds. China is constantly looking at ways of improving its infrastructure to deal with its expanding traffic concerns. It's said that this bus could by itself replace 40 standard Chinese buses.

The TEB will be unaffected by the traffic situation below, while occupying the same roads, making bus lanes a thing of the past. Everyone is a winner with this one. And this explains the tremendous excitement that this project has inspired people with.

This invention is really an alternative to the subway, a largely unpleasant service which dominates the commuter traffic in most cities around the world. How much better would it be, to be perched atop the traffic looking out of the window at clear daylight! I would find it much easier to drag myself out of bed in the morning knowing I could be riding in this luxurious behemoth, rather than having to face another cramped bus or train journey/

It is estimated that TEB will cost only 20% of the price of building a subway. If these figures are indeed accurate, we could be seeing TEB in some Western cities in the future. Wouldn’t that be great! For this possibility we have to thank the pioneering company behind TEB, Jinchuang Corp.
